The “Grand Raid BCVS” in Verbier (Canton Valais) is one of the toughest marathon races for mountain bikers.

Tanja Priller also reached her limit there.

But at the finish she had a special qualification.

Penzberg / Verbier - The specialist magazine "Bike" compiled a list of the "15 toughest mountain bike races in the world" a few years ago. And among them was the “Grand Raid BCVS” in Verbier, Switzerland (canton Valais) - and not without good reason, as Tanja Priller recently learned. On the marathon route over 125 kilometers and a good 5000 meters in altitude, the Penzberg woman reached her limit shortly before the end.

Virtually the last obstacle before the finish in Grimentz is the path up to the Pas de Lona (2787 meters), including an infamous, inaccessible passage through a gravel field, on which the bikes have to be pushed up. Until then, “I still had a lot of fun”, reported the Penzberg woman, who has already won several times this year. But after that it got violent. The sliding passage “was totally brutal”, says Tanja Priller. “In the meantime, I didn't even know how I was supposed to get any further.” Once at the top, there was still no release. "The rough descent afterwards to the finish was brutally difficult with the tired arms," said the licensed driver. “But somehow I made it to the finish line.” The 24-year-old even crossed the finish line in a leading position; with a time of 9:02:34 hours she took eighth place. In doing so, she succeeded in doing what she actually came to Verbier for: qualifying for the Mountain Bike World Championship in the “marathon” discipline. The title fights take place in early October on the island of Elba. Priller is now looking forward to it.

Legendary sliding passage on the Pas de Lona

Apart from the pushing passage, the Penzberg woman was "pretty good" during the nine hours on the bike. She managed to "drive constant watt values and always overtake others". Thanks to her result at the “Grand Raid BCVS”, the driver from the “Edelsten - Reichel Hörgeräte” team improved significantly in the UCI world rankings and is now in 26th place as the fourth-best German. The competition in Switzerland is also part of the newly introduced “UCI Mountain Bike World Series”, a kind of world cup for marathon races. Since it went so well for her there, Priller is considering taking part in the World Series Race in La Forestiere, France, in September. with a top placement she could jump into the top ten in the World Series rankings; the Penzbergerin is currently in 13th place.

The sports economics student will be back in action this coming weekend.

Priller takes part in the "Kronplatzking" race in South Tyrol.

From St. Vigil it goes over 64 kilometers and 3150 meters in altitude to the finish in Rit.
