The draw for the Basketball World Cup qualifiers, which was held today in the Swiss city of Mays, has placed the Syrian men's team in Group D, along with the teams of Iran, Kazakhstan and Bahrain, which will start next November.
The World Cup qualifiers system for the Asian continent is based on the distribution of the sixteen participating teams into four groups, each group comprising four teams, distributed according to the geographical division “two groups for East Asia and the same for West Asia.”
The first stage will be played in a home and away system distributed over three windows, the first starting from the 22nd to the 30th of next November, the second from the 21st of next February to the first of March 2022, and the third from the 27th of June until the 5th of July 2022.
The first three teams from each group qualify for the second stage of the qualifiers to merge with one of the East Asian groups to form a group of six teams, with each team carrying its points from the first stage to the second stage, with another group also consisting of six teams.
In the second stage, the six teams play against each other in the home and away system, provided that the teams of one group do not play in the first stage with each other again, and the best three teams from each group qualify for the World Cup finals.
It is noteworthy that the share of Asia and Oceania in the World Cup 2023 is 8 teams, and considering that Japan and the Philippines are the hosting countries for the tournament, they will qualify directly and six teams will compete for the remaining cards. Only for Asia.
