ANALYSIS - The CIES Football Observatory has published a new report devoted to the economics of transfers within the five biggest European leagues for almost a decade.

Make way for analysis. While the summer transfer market closed its doors on Tuesday, the CIES Football Observatory conducted an analysis on the transactions made in recent weeks. The research group went even further by engaging in a detailed examination of the operations of the clubs of the five major European leagues over the past decade. Reading its last monthly report, we see that the world of football, at least as regards transfers, is still strongly impacted by the coronavirus crisis.

Over the whole of 2019, that is to say before the pandemic, the investments - transfer and loan compensation as well as the bonuses - made by all the “Big-5” formations reached € 6,650 million.

In 2021, these expenses are down sharply, amounting to € 3,834 million.

We can nevertheless observe a small rebound in the last summer transfer window compared to that of the previous year (+ 2%).

Despite everything, these figures remain much higher than those at the beginning.
