Stéphane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer retain their title and achieve the “back-to-back” hoped for by the flag-bearer on Wednesday, after his elimination in singles against the Japanese world No. 1 Shingo Kundieda.
At 50 years old, Stéphane Houdet, who has 23 Grand Slam titles in singles and doubles, topped his record with a fifth Paralympic medal, a third in gold.
When the video arbitration confirmed the French point, Nicolas Peifer burst into tears and Stéphane Houdet rushed to the members of the French delegation present to claim one of their tricolor flags suspended in the empty stands.
