Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the world famous Pelé, underwent surgery on Saturday September 4 to remove a suspicious tumor in his right colon. The information was confirmed on Monday by the former player himself through his official profile on Instagram. The post on social media was made after his representative, Joe Fraga, confirmed that Pelé has been hospitalized for six days at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, for an annual review. According to the hospital, the former footballer is recovering well and is expected to be released from the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) on Tuesday.

“My friends, thank you very much for the messages of affection.

I thank God that I feel very well (...) Last Saturday I had surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon.

They identified the tumor during the tests I mentioned last week, ”he wrote.

“Fortunately, I am used to celebrating great victories at your side.

I will face this new game with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and the joy of being surrounded by the love of my family and my friends.

Pelé was admitted to the hospital last week to undergo routine checkups each year. Doctors observed the "suspicious lesion" in his colon during the battery of tests and chose to remove the tumor in an operation on Saturday. The businessman Joe Fraga, Pelé's right hand man, had already reassured the fans by commenting on the state of health of the football myth, three times world champion with Brazil. “He undergoes a battery of blood tests, a check-up, a colonoscopy, etc. Much more than just physical tests. Not all [tests] are done in one day, ”he explained. Fraga is CEO of Sports 10, the company that owns the worldwide rights to the Pelé brand, and has known him for 20 years.

In a medical bulletin published at 3:00 p.m. this Monday, the Albert Einstein Hospital confirms that Pelé is evolving favorably and anticipates his transfer from the ICU to his room on Tuesday, September 7. “The patient Edson Arantes do Nascimento underwent surgery last Saturday to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. The tumor was identified during routine cardiovascular and laboratory tests and the material was sent for pathological analysis. The patient, who is progressing favorably, is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and is expected to be transferred to a room on Tuesday, ”the statement confirms.

The last time Pelé had posted on his Instagram, on August 31, it was to deny rumors about his health. “Friends, I have not passed out and I am in very good health. I went for routine checkups, which I hadn't been able to do before because of the pandemic. You know that I'm not going to play the next day! ”He joked on social networks. The aforementioned tests were used to detect the tumor in the colon.

Pelé has experienced some health problems in recent years for which he has restricted his public appearances.

He has had surgery on his hip, which makes it difficult for him to move, and has had to remove stones from his kidney.

Precisely, he has been missing a kidney since the 70s, when it had to be removed as a result of a blow he suffered while playing in the United States.

His son Edinho went so far as to say that

Pelé was depressed due to the limitations of his health and that his condition was worsened by the isolation necessary during the pandemic.

Pelé will turn 81 on October 23.
