Germany's victory against Iceland: The DFB

2021-09-08T21:20:56.806Z

Three games under the new national coach Hansi Flick have now been played, Leroy Sané was also able to promote himself against Iceland. Just like someone who was injured for a long time last season: Thilo Kehrer.

Manuel Neuer (goal):

The captain was attentive, both in the build-up of the game as well as in long passes by the Icelanders and in the classic goalkeeping game.

Neuer conducted his defensive players loudly, which could be heard clearly in this wonderfully picturesque Laugardalsvöllur stadium.

Jonas Hofmann (defense, up to 45th minute):

Part of modern football is sometimes running for free.

Hofmann did that regularly in this game, the Gladbach player repeatedly started down on the right side.

The ball came very rarely, however, the game was generally more left-heavy.

Hofmann wants to retrain as a right-back with verve for the chance of a regular place.

Games against Iceland won't determine whether Flick will be rewarded for his idea, however.

Lukas Klostermann, (defense, from 46th minute):

The Leipziger stood high and was clearly trying to show his offensive game.

But as in the first half, there wasn't as much going over the right side, Klostermann could hardly distinguish himself.

Niklas Süle (defense, up to 60th minute):

The Bayern defender didn't have to go the full distance after a solid performance.

Süle made no mistakes, which is necessary for a defender.

But there is also little left that will not bring him a regular place in the long run.

Süle has to improve, especially when it comes to building up the game.

Robin Gosens, (defense, from 60th minute):

The left-back is fit to play again after his foot injury against Liechtenstein, that is the most important news.

Antonio Rüdiger (defense):

Good free kicks and corners are not rocket science, they just have to be trained, practiced and discussed.

A beneficiary of the work of the new standard coach Mads Buttgereit is Rüdiger, the central defender of Chelsea FC is the target of many crosses.

This was also the case in the 24th minute when Kimmich took a free kick from the right and Rüdiger took advantage of the place he had fought for with a header into the far corner.

Otherwise, Rüdiger was a prudent and strong duel defense chief.

Thilo Kehrer (defense):

Three international games under the new national coach Hansi Flick, three times to zero and Kehrer was in the starting line-up in all games.

The defender, who was injured for a long time in the preseason, is approaching his best form, he confirmed the impressions from Paris.

His big plus: Kehrer can play inside and on both sides, which will guarantee him a place in the squad in the long term.

Sure, as a left-back, Kehrer lacks offensive power, but that's factored in.

Defensively, he knew how to convince against Iceland both on the ground and in the air.

Joshua Kimmich (midfield):

Lupfer behind the defense are an important stylistic device to tear apart deep lines of defense.

Kimmich is often the initiator of such balls, with Gnabry's opening goal the six himself started deep and thus played a decisive role in the development.

Otherwise, Kimmich's usual careful appearance, who also prepared Rüdiger's second goal with a free kick.

Leon Goretzka (midfielder, up to 80th minute):

It wasn't as spectacular as against Armenia, when Goretzka was involved in a large number of scoring opportunities.

But the Munich man also knew how to convince against Iceland, as a driver and distance shooter - his goal in the 63rd minute was not recognized because of an offside position by Musiala.

Florian Wirtz, (midfield, from the 80th minute):

The 18-year-old was allowed to participate a little in the final phase without setting any accents.

Serge Gnabry (midfield, until 45th minute):

As against Armenia, an early goal helped the German team in their offensive spirit - and again it was Gnabry who struck.

The FC Bayern attacker, again on the right in 4-2-3-1, benefited from a creative move and scored from close range.

In the further course of the game Gnabry dived, Bayern will be free if his early substitution.

Kai Havertz (midfield, from 46th minute):

The Champions League winner from Chelsea was still missing against Armenia, now he made his 20th international match at the beginning of the second half.

Havertz was immediately in the game, called for the balls and should have hit goalkeeper Halldórsson free standing in front of goalkeeper Halldórsson (55th).

İlkay Gündoğan (midfielder):

It doesn't happen that often that Gündoğan is allowed to play on the ten in the national team.

A few days ago, the Manchester City pro said he was finding it difficult to switch to a position other than at the club.

Against Iceland, Gündoğan tried to steer the offensive, to go into the penalty area himself and to create chances.

It was often just attempts, the veteran got bogged down.

After the break, Gündoğan became stronger, against more courageous Icelanders he made the best use of the available space and initiated some counterattacks.

14/17

Leroy Sané (attack, up to 60th minute):

It was half an hour before Sané got a subtle whistle from Flick.

The offensive player of FC Bayern had thwarted a counter-opportunity.

As good as his performance against Armenia was, Sané will have to live with being incited in the coming months with Flick's new favorite sentence - "That must be the benchmark".

Sané didn't come off too well against Iceland at first, although many attacks ran over his side.

After the break he hit with a heavy shot under the crossbar to make it 3-0.

Jamal Musiala, midfield (from the 60th minute):

The youngster remains an important option because he hardly needs any adjustment time.

This time his dribbles did not lead to countable success, but Musiala tried again and again.

16/17

Timo Werner (attack):

What is left of this international trip with regard to Werner?

Flick went out of his way to bolster one of his few options for attack.

Werner will not play too much at Chelsea in the future either, so three games in the starting XI were all the more important.

Against Armenia, Werner, like the entire team, convinced without abandoning his hesitant behavior in important situations.

This trend continued, which was particularly evident in the big chances he had missed in the second half (48th / 61st).

As a result, his self-confidence clearly suffered, after which Werner hardly succeeded in anything.

The crumbling goal to make it 4-0 did little to change that.

Hansi Flick:

The national coach can return home satisfied.

Three games, three wins, no goal conceded and an atmospheric intermediate step against Armenia.

In Reykjavik his team won again without any problems, but this time without showing the great playfulness.

But Flick saw the beginnings of his preferred game again: starting up early, switching quickly and working out chances in a straight line.

Overall, it was a mandatory task, after all, many players have their next tasks in the club on Saturday.
