Canadian professional tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime has reached the semi-finals at the US Open.

The 21-year-old profited in New York on Tuesday evening (local time) in the quarter-finals from the injury-related abandonment of his opponent Carlos Alcaraz.

The 18-year-old Spaniard, who knocked out qualifier Peter Gojowczyk in five sets in the round of 16, had to pass because of leg complaints at the score of 3: 6, 1: 3.

Alcaraz, who had already sent home favorite Tsitsipas in the tournament and was the youngest player to play in a quarter-finals of the US Open, called the physiotherapist when the score was 1: 2 in the second set, one game later he broke off the match and 68 minutes had been played .

"Until the moment when he called the physio, I didn't notice anything," Auger-Aliassime is quoted as saying at Eurosport.

First Grand Slam semi-final, opponent: Medvedev

This makes him the first Canadian ever to reach the semifinals of the US Open.

He is also the youngest player since the Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro in 2009, who is fighting for a place in the final in New York.

In the semifinals, his first in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, Auger-Aliassime faces Russian Daniil Medvedev.

The number two in the world won against Dutch qualifiers Botic van de Zandschulp 6: 3, 6: 0, 4: 6, 7: 5.

The 25-year-old Muscovite has won eleven hard court titles since 2018 - more than any other professional.

But like Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who will meet South African Lloyd Harris on Wednesday (around 8 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de, TV: Eurosport), he is still waiting for a great triumph in a Grand Slam tournament.
