The European Football Association (UEFA) has threatened a possible European boycott of the World Cup if the International Federation (FIFA) implements its plans to hold the tournament every two years.

FIFA is reviewing the international matches schedule under the supervision of former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, who proposes to hold a major tournament every year.

"We can decide not to play in the World Cup and, according to my information, South America takes the same position, so I wish the best of luck for the World Cup in this way," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.

Ceferin added that this proposal strongly contradicts the basic principles of football and warned that playing every summer in a month-long tournament is fatal for players and if it is held every two years it will conflict with the Women's World Cup and Olympics.

The FIFA Council had voted by the majority to conduct a feasibility study for the idea, but Ceferin stressed the need to reject it, explaining that it might be beneficial to UEFA from a financial point of view, but the problem is that it may kill the game and the players, and it is likely that the clubs will not allow the players to go and this will cause a complete division.

Along with UEFA, the European League was opposed to the idea.
