Nine million euros in bonuses for the Blue medalists.
The amount of the envelope dedicated to the French sportsmen who climbed on the podium during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo was formalized on Friday by the Minister of Sports Roxana Maracineanu during her back-to-school press conference.
In detail, six million euros will be given to Olympic medalists, while disabled athletes who have distinguished themselves in Japan will touch "about three" explained the former swimmer.
A difference which can be explained by the number of medalists on the able-bodied side, because the amount of bonuses allocated for a medal is the same between Olympic and Paralympic athletes with 65,000 euros for gold, 25,000 for silver and 15 000 for bronze. And even if France returned from the Paralympic Games with 54 charms against 33 at the Olympics, the impressive harvest of French team sports in August explains this difference.
Indeed, each medalist athlete benefits from the bonus and the gold of handball players, handball players and volleyball players in Tokyo helped to raise the score.
"Fortunately we had planned wide," had explained to Parisian Roxana Maracineanu on the last day of the Olympics.
We have a variable budget of seven to ten million euros to share between the Olympic and Paralympic Games in both Tokyo and the winter in Beijing (Editor's note: in February 2022).
The athletes received Monday at the Élysée
Coaches also benefit from a bonus, which cannot be combined in the case of a team sport, if one of their athlete climbs on the podium.
This money, paid by the National Sports Agency, is 35,000 euros for a gold medalist, 15,000 euros for the silver and 8,000 euros for the bronze.
The bonuses for medalists have been revalued compared to the Rio Olympics, with the emphasis placed on the highest distinction, awarded 50,000 euros five years ago.
The money went from 20,000 to 25,000 euros and the bronze from 13,000 to 15,000. These bonuses are taxable, while the athletes who live abroad receive an amount reduced by 15% to compensate for the taxation of residents of France.
All the medal-winning athletes this summer are invited to the Élysée on Monday, where they will be received by the President, Emmanuel Macron.
In addition, more than 150 medalists from the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, such as handball player Luc Abalo or judokate Clarisse Agbégnénou, were promoted on Friday and were awarded the Legion of Honor or the National Order of Merit.
