Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas has won the second sprint race in the history of Formula 1, but world championship leader Max Verstappen will start from pole position at the Grand Prix in Monza, Italy.
The Dutch Red Bull driver took second place behind Bottas in the short race over 18 laps on Saturday.
In the race on Sunday (3 p.m. CEST, TV: Sky and RTL), the Finn will be transferred to the end of the field because of an engine change.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes finished fifth after a false start and will start from fourth on Sunday.
The Australian Daniel Ricciardo then completes the front row in a McLaren.
Verstappen extends points lead on Hamilton
Bottas, Verstappen and Ricciardo also earned points in the drivers' standings as the top three in the new format (3-2-1).
Verstappen thus expanded the lead over Hamilton to five points.
Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin took twelfth place, Mick Schumacher had to be content with 19th place in the Haas.
On normal racing weekends, there are three free sessions on Friday and Saturday morning to prepare for the normal qualifying.
The new sprint format is being used for the second time in Monza; it premiered in Silverstone.
