In Morlaix

Damien Cloarec, ambassador of the bay of Morlaix like Armel Le Cléac'h, Jérémie Beyou or even Nicolas Troussel, former brilliant winners of the queen event, had left the world of the Solitaire du Figaro in 2019. And this after a 25th place like the previous year.

This 52nd edition was not planned in its program two months ago.

Victim of the health crisis like the

vulgum pecus

, he had seen his sponsor withdraw at the beginning of the year:

“So I signed up for a state diploma to be a sailing trainer. I must also finalize my file for my oral in November. In fact, I created a collective in Roscoff, in the bay of Morlaix, to support sailors who want to do the Mini Transat. The idea is that there are between five and ten boats during training. And there is demand. I think we are writing a great story. "

So here is the Carantécois at a turning point in his life as a sailor when he receives a phone call from one of his friends.

One of his former sponsors.

“The latter speaks to me franco.

The race starting from Saint-Nazaire and there is such enthusiasm internally, how can we do to participate.

This is how much the minimum stake for you to participate for us.

In fact, his rail safety company is struggling to recruit engineers.

He therefore wishes to take advantage of the Solitaire du Figaro to boost his communication in this direction, ”

explains Damien Cloarec.

It takes at least two years of thorough training before you think you can get into the top fifteen.

The start of this edition is difficult for the 37-year-old sailor. The lack of training certainly explains this. Currently 25th, He keeps smiling:

“I'm really happy to be in the race. To get there, whatever the result, it is necessary to have already set up the project and it is not an easy task. It is always a lot of time, of energy. So the results are more than positive because I was at the start, I manage to do my Solitaire without any real preparation against the elite of offshore racing, the gratin. A challenge to rub shoulders with them. I took two stages to get into it and in the last one, I was more involved. I have done beautiful things. I took the lead at Lundy in Wales, I made some cool tactical moves. So there is a frustrating side because I know I can do better. We know that in Figaro, it takes at least two years of thorough training before thinking thatwe can get into the top fifteen. There is no secret. "

Contemplating is a luxury that cannot be afforded.

Can we find some fun then?

“We are all the time in the race, the pleasure comes by going to the end of oneself. This is where I see that I am getting old because the boat is hard. There is also frustration because you go through beautiful places, like in the North of English Cornwall, where you don't have time to enjoy it. Taking the binoculars to look at the majestic cliffs, contemplating is a luxury that you cannot afford. In fact, if you have a little time, you take the opportunity to close your eyes. What I recommend to the Minists that I train. I also made a mistake at the end. Like a bruise. I slept over two hours straight and the boat was going at 2.5 knots and banging when I woke up. A tableclothalgae around me… ”

Damien Cloarec will leave tomorrow Sunday at 4 p.m. from the bay of Morlaix for the final stage of this intense Solitaire du Figaro. A 685 mile journey via the Fastnet. Let us wish him to have the same smile on arrival in Saint-Nazaire.
