Alexander Zverev's dream of the first Grand Slam title has burst again.
Six weeks after winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the German number one lost to title favorite Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the US Open 6: 4, 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 4, 2: 6.
In the previous year, Zverev had reached the final in New York, now the world number one from Serbia turned out to be too strong on his historic title mission.
"Alexander is a great champion," said Djokovic.
"It was a great battle," said Zverev.
“We both left everything in the square.
In the most important moments it suddenly becomes a wall. "
Medvedev is waiting in the final
Djokovic took revenge for the defeat he suffered against Zverev in the Olympic semifinals and is now fighting on Sunday against the Russian world number two Daniil Medvedev for the first calendar grand slam since Rod Laver in 1969. Medvedev won 6-4, 7-5 in the first semifinals , 6: 2 against the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime prevailed.
Djokovic has already won the trophies in Melbourne, Paris and Wimbledon this year.
He has a great chance of becoming the sole Grand Slam record winner ahead of Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Rafael Nadal (Spain).
All three have 20 titles in the four most important tournaments of the year.
