The perfect Cinderella story. Last night (Saturday), 18-year-old Emma Reducano became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since 1968, after defeating Leila Fernandez 4-6, 3-6 in the United States Championship final and completing a sensational tournament against all odds.
Redcano started the tournament ranked 150th in the world (and not ranked at all in the tournament, of course), made it all the way from the qualifiers, and completed winning the prestigious title without losing a single set for ten games in 14 days. To what extent is this a sensational achievement? Until three months ago, Reducano was still in high school and her father insisted she graduate with a full matriculation certificate. Until the tournament, she had not won a single game in the WTA round, had not yet played a professional game on clay or participated in a major draw of any tournament, and even after winning a title, she had not yet played a career playing more than two sets.
Redcano is the first open-age winner to win the tournament after advancing from the qualifiers, the youngest tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004 and the first tennis player since Serena Williams to win the United States Championship in 2014 without dropping a battle.

And after climbing 127 steps in the world rankings to 23rd place, establishing herself as Britain's top batsman and raking in a cash prize of $ 2.5 million (about 8 times what she has earned so far in her entire career), Redcano is starting to digest. "You say to yourself, 'I want to win a Grand Slam,' and you really believe in it and put it into practice. And yet, now that it's happening I'm hard to believe," he said excitedly at the end. "It's very hard to please my dad, but after the last few weeks, when I finished high school with the required credentials and won the first Grand Slam of my career, I think I succeeded."
Redcano, who defeated 19-year-old Leila Fernandez in what could be a final that begins a new era in the industry (the last time teens met in a Grand Slam final - 17-year-old Serena Williams vs. 18-year-old Martine Hingis at the 1998 United States Championships) added : "I knew I would have to find myself forces that I did not necessarily believe existed in me. I stayed focused for a moment throughout the tournament, I managed to avoid distractions, and this approach helped me a lot even in difficult times."
Reducano recalls how "I just finished my high school exams a few months ago, and did not really believe it was possible. I had three weeks to prepare for my first Wimbledon tournament. I reached the fourth round, and I thought it was a great achievement. So winning the United States Championship three months later is it. No less amazing. "

With the sensational win and the sudden publicity also comes a burden. Within a few days Reducano had become a British promise that the whole kingdom supported, and this morning received wishes and congratulations from Queen Elizabeth II as well. "This is an extraordinary achievement at such a young age, and it is proof of your hard work and perseverance," the Queen wrote to her. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was also among the welcome. "What a sensation! Congratulations to Emma Redacano," he wrote, "You have shown exceptional qualities, character and composure and we are all very proud of you."
Reducano knows that from today it will no longer be a Cinderella story and that expectations of it will skyrocket.
Some in the industry are already wondering if this is a one-time transcendence - in an ESPN commentary column they wrote: "Reducano is suddenly the next big thing in women's tennis, but in an ever-changing industry, her and Leila Fernandez's future is still a question mark. "After the game I took a shower, relaxed and did all the usual things that calm me down," says Redcano, who hardly knows what she is heading towards.
