Dortmund's Bellingham against Beşiktaş: best of the year in the premier class

2021-09-15T21:41:29.596Z

It could be the season of Jude Bellingham: Dortmund's 18-year-old all-rounder showed a class performance at the start of the Champions League. Only a late goal spoils the black and yellow luck.

The player of the game:

The talent factory Borussia Dortmund can consider themselves lucky to have Erling Haaland in their ranks. The Norwegian is not only on the way to becoming the best center forward of his generation. As a media-effective alpha animal, he also draws the headlines so much that the other world-class talents of BVB can mature in peace. Gradually, however, another youngster is playing his way into the front row: Jude Bellingham, born in 2003, shapes the central midfield. Bellingham conquers balls, distributes them, chooses clever running paths and, as a goal scorer and preparer against Beşiktaş, collected his five and six points for the season. Where should a footballer grow who, at the age of 18, naturally excels in the premier class?

The result:

In the end, the result of Istanbul did not do justice to the course of the game, the 2: 1 (2: 0) had a lot to do with missed Dortmund chances and a never-minded Beşiktaş team.

Black and yellow holes:

BVB coach Marco Rose should be particularly annoyed about the "to one".

Since the cup game against Wehen Wiesbaden, Dortmund have not been without conceding a goal, in the Bundesliga there are already nine.

Only Greuther Fürth and Hertha BSC conceded more hits on the first four match days.

At the beginning of the Champions League, captain Mats Hummels returned to the back four, he should fill the holes on the defensive.

The first half:

At the beginning, however, Hummels was turned inside out by ex-Dortmund's Michy Batshuayi, the Belgian maneuvered himself in the penalty area into a shooting position and forced BVB keeper Gregor Kobel to make a brilliant parade (6th minute). In any case, the Istanbul cauldron lashed Beşiktaş loudly in the first quarter of an hour. Only then did Dortmund gradually begin to control the game, Bellingham chased goalkeeper Ersin Destanoğlu after a nice move the ball through the legs to make it 1-0 (20th). Shortly before the break, Haaland increased after a throw-in variant for the now much stronger BVB (45th + 2), prepared by a remarkable individual action by Bellingham.

In the sense of the coat of arms calm:

All of this happened in the so-called »cup jersey«, the Champions League gap of the black and yellow. That jersey has been criticized in fan circles for a while: Originally it was supposed to do without the club logo, a preliminary version leaked in May did not go down well online. The finished jersey now exchanged the lettering »Dortmund« for »BVB 09«, the previously missing coat of arms now shimmers at least slightly through the fabric. It remains to be seen whether this will calm the minds of the supporters.

A touch of Barça:

If the leaders of the Süper Lig were dangerous for Dortmund, it usually had a lot to do with a prominent entry in midfield. Only at the beginning of the month Miralem Pjanić was on loan from FC Barcelona to the Turkish champions, while BVB coach Rose had warned of the Bosnian's abilities before the start of the game: Pjanić was “an outstanding footballer”, one had to “watch out for interface balls”. That often went well, but not always. The 1: 2 shortly before the end was prepared by the 31-year-old with a free-kick flank.

The second half:

At the beginning, Beşiktaş even managed to constrict BVB largely in their own half. The home side only lacked ideas around the penalty area, scoring opportunities arose especially when things got fast and hectic. In the duel between two good goalkeepers, Ersin against Bellingham and Kobel against Batshuayi were both on the post (67th). In the final phase, BVB seemed closer to 3-0. Ansgar Knauff only hit the crossbar (90th + 2) before Pjanić made his appearance via template for Javi Montero (90th + 4) - despite a proud seven minutes of stoppage time, it stayed with the following goal.

Mats from:

Stabilizer Hummels was no longer on the pitch at this point.

After 70 minutes it was over for the ailing captain, after patellar tendon problems the full length of the game seemed to be too much for the veteran.

Summer signing Donyell Malen, who is still waiting for his personal BVB knot to burst despite his committed performance, and match winner Bellingham were also allowed to call it a day earlier.

So it goes on:

The other Dortmund opponents in the Champions League are Sporting and Ajax.

Next, the club from Lisbon is expected in front of the home yellow wall, on September 28th the time will come (9 p.m., stream: Amazon Prime, live ticker: SPIEGEL.de).
