Borussia Dortmund is considered the favorite in Group C - and lived up to this role on the first day of the match. In Istanbul, BVB showed an inspired performance, but still had to tremble in the end.

Borussia Dortmund started with a win in Group C of the Champions League.

BVB won 2-1 (2-0) at Beşiktaş and has thus laid a good basis before the other group games against Sporting and Ajax Amsterdam.

Jude Bellingham (21st minute) and Erling Haaland (45th + 3) scored the goals for Borussia in Istanbul.

Francisco Montero (90 + 4) scored for the home team.

The evening game on the Bosporus got off to an atmospheric start, thanks to the 20,000 approved fans.

But also the former BVB striker Michy Batshuayi, who forced keeper Gregor Kobel to do a brilliant act with his twisting shot (6th).

The noise ceased abruptly when Bellingham met the Dortmund leadership, Thomas Meunier had served him with his cross from the right (21st).

Favorite Dortmund left the ball to Beşiktaş, but had chances and could have led more clearly.

Haaland and Marco Reus failed to take advantage of good closing opportunities.

Mats Hummels had returned to the starting line-up and stabilized BVB's defensive position, which had previously been vulnerable with nine goals conceded in four league games.

This increased in the final seconds of the first half: The strong Bellingham hurried away from the Beşiktaş defense on the left and found the ideal buyer with Haaland in the backcourt (45th + 3).

BVB coach Marco Rose changed Axel Witsel for Julian Brandt in the second half and thus further stabilized his team on the defensive.

Although Beşiktaş professional Atiba Hutchinson came to a header, the odds for a comeback of the Turkish champions did not increase.

For a long time, the team could not find any means that BVB controlled and knew how to skilfully prevent fast counter-attacks if they lost the ball - and almost increased it to 3-0, but the substitute Ansgar Knauff missed a counter chance in the second minute of stoppage time, aiming freely in front of the goal the 19-year-old too high and hit the bar.

A standard was still causing tension.

Miralem Pjanić, on loan from FC Barcelona to Beşiktaş, found Montero with a free-kick cross, who prevailed against Witsel and headed to the connection (90 + 4).

Because BVB defended much more confidently than in the furious 4: 3 win against Bayer Leverkusen, the Champions League season got off to a good start.
