After moving to the Boston Celtics, the German NBA professional Dennis Schröder let the fans vote on his upcoming shirt number - and almost scored an own goal.
The 71 only just won ahead of the 96, which the 28-year-old wanted to avoid.
48.84 percent of the participants voted for the winning number.
The unloved 96 received at least 41.76 percent of the vote.
The national player had given clear indications before the vote.
"As you can imagine, the 96 is not necessarily my favorite because I come from Braunschweig," says Schröder.
The reason for this is the football rivalry between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96.
Schröder had moved from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Celtics in the summer.
For the record champions he could not select the usual 17 because it was withdrawn from circulation in honor of the club idol John "Hondo" Havlicek, who died in 2019.
In the end he got the 1 and the 7 in reverse order.
According to Schröder, he would have liked to take the 38, but Forward Sam Hauser is already wearing it in Boston.
