Michael Gansler (70) has helped shape local politics in Unterammergau for no less than 42 years.

At a ceremony on October 15, the former town hall chief will receive the highest award that his home parish has to bestow.

  • The former mayor of Unterammergau, Michael Gansler, is made an honorary citizen.

  • The ceremony is scheduled for October 15th.

  • Another award will follow on November 30th.

Unterammergau

- Local politics is in Michael Gansler's genes. Even as a boy he always listens diligently when his father Johann shares stories from the local council. “It's in your blood,” says the 70-year-old, describing his great passion. The culmination of his voluntary work awaits in Unterammergau on October 15: Then Michael Gansler will be officially offered his honorary citizenship on the village square. “I am of course extremely pleased,” emphasizes the man who was the undisputed number one under the Pürschling for many years.

"Michi deserves it," says someone who should know: District Administrator Anton Speer.

The two faced each other as candidates in 2002, Speer drew the short straw, but became Gansler's runner-up six years later.

"Toni was allowed to serve under me once," said Schlitzohr Gansler once to the daily newspaper.

Unanimous vote

The vote for his promotion was almost unanimous in the local council on Thursday.

Only Gansler's son Florian did not take part in the vote for reasons of bias.

The committee had already discussed the Gansler case non-publicly in July.

Even then, a clear picture of opinion emerged.

Michael Spindler (CSU) is “frankly” behind the decision.

"Because Michael Gansler has initiated an incredible number of projects." The district administrator can only agree with this.

In this context, Speer mentions village renewal, the local model and the industrial area.

Over the years, Gansler has shown perseverance and perseverance - whether as a local councilor (1978 to 2002), as second mayor (1990 to 1996) or as head of town hall (2002 to 2020).

In addition, it should not be forgotten that the father of four children and grandpa of twelve grandchildren was also involved in the parish.

For 36 years, i.e. six terms of office, the former altar boy was one of the pillars of the church administration.

Headquartered in the district council, active in the company

Of course, the former mayor and successful building contractor is still interested in local politics.

And he is not on the sidelines anyway - on the one hand Gansler has been a member of the district council (since 2008), on the other hand he is now back on the gas in the family business.

"And full bottle, 120 percent."

In just under four weeks he will be able to call himself an honorary citizen alongside the long-standing local councilor and fire brigade commander Josef Lindauer.

There are no special privileges associated with this.

“You are invited to festivals and you can eat and drink for free,” jokes local patriot Gansler, who is extremely proud of this honor.

The award on October 15th is not the last this year: On November 30th, the Ammertaler can travel to Rosenheim.

There he received the Silver Medal of Honor from the Bavarian Minister of the Interior for special services to local government.
