Despite a crowd won over to his cause, the Belgian lost at home, during the World Championships (43.3km) in Louvain (Belgium), for six

Belgian fervor was not enough.

Placed among the contenders for the world title on the time trial, Wout Van Aert believed to impose himself on his land, after 43km passed in the lead, Sunday, during the World Road cycling in Leuven.

While a Belgian double (with Remco Evenepoel) was even possible when the Jumbo-Visma rider crossed the finish line, Filippo Ganna came to spoil the party for six seconds, achieving a superb double on the 'event (2020 and 2021).

The Italian machine of Ineos Grenadiers set its wheels perfectly, and the difference was made in the final.

While the 25-year-old Transalpine driver was only eight tenths behind Van Aert in second intermediate (10km from the finish), the freshness retained for the finish allowed him to make the difference.

At 21, the “little Cannibal” Remco Evenepoel has managed to climb to the third step of the podium (+ 43 ″), two years after having acquired the European title in the specialty. For his part, Wout Van Aert, who could have dreamed of doubling the title in the stopwatch and in the road race, will now focus on this second event, which will take place on September 26. The French could not do better than a 14th place for Rémi Cavagna (+ 1′59 ″) and a 27th place for Benjamin Thomas (+ 3′28 ″).
