Leadership, sudden deficit, catching up plus happy ending: the opening game of the ice hockey Oberliga Süd between SC Riessersee and Starbulls Rosenheim had everything your heart desires - just not quite from Rosenheim's point of view.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen -

Josef Lehner walks slowly from the ice, he bows his head and then a grin flashes over his face.

No wonder, the stadium announcer of the SC Riessersee finally has an audience again with whom he can interact.

That was before the first face-off.

And the smile should grace his face even after the game.

Because together with the SCR and 1523 fans - of course excluding those of the opponents - he was allowed to cheer the victory of the white-blue team in the first opening game in Oberliga Süd's history.

After a thrilling thriller, the hosts won against Starbulls Rosenheim 4: 3 after extra time.

1523 spectators watch the premiere of the opening game

Already five minutes after kick-off, Lehner was allowed to go about his job from a pleasant point of view: "Goal for the sports club ...", the loudspeakers echoed, and "Rieeesssserseeee" boomed back from the stands. The first goal of the new season was on the account of the white-blue team. Kilian Raubal was cleared in the backcourt, pulled the shot on goal, and Benjamin Kronawitter held his stick in its trajectory - 1-0. Riessersee earned this leadership more and more from minute to minute. The first power play was dominated by professional ice hockey, but in five-on-five the Garmisch-Partenkirchner showed exactly what is necessary for the game system of Coach Pat Cortina: immense willingness to run. That was true for the offensive as well as the defensive. Rosenheim did not take place in the attack. Why, because Felix Linden and Co.did a strong job. They nipped in the bud any attack by the starbulls. It was dangerous if the host allowed himself to make mistakes. But again and again an SCR player was quickly on hand to iron out things for the other.

Riessersee dominated, before Rosenheim acted ice cold in excess

Nothing changed until the 34th minute, which is why there was also the appreciative thumbs up from Cortina.

But then it was no longer needed in this form for a long time, because then the Riessersee made mistakes, which had consequences.

The SCR received three consecutive penalties - Kronawitter, Robin Soudek, Michael Knaub.

And Rosenheim needed exactly 4:25 minutes to turn the majority of the game upside down - 3: 1 for the guests.

The Starbulls patiently let the target run through their own ranks before a player had enough space to find the gap between the post and goalie Daniel Allavena.

Three blows to the neck

A threefold blow in the neck, which lasted a long time, deep into the final third.

The Riesserseer had now lost their previously broadcast sovereignty.

Rosenheim determined the game.

But they gave control as well as the hosts - per penalty.

This time the SCR showed itself patiently in the power play.

When Florian Vollmer was played on the outside lane, Knaub slowly fell back into the center in front of the Rosenheimer Tor and was served by his captain at the perfect moment.

2: 3, suddenly everything seemed possible again.

And that was even more so after Simon Mayr grabbed the puck in his own half, initiated the attack and completed it himself.

Equalization in minute 58. Extra time.

Mayr's violent shot puts fans and players in ecstasy

In that, the SCR had to watch for around 1:15 minutes, because Rosenheim called the puck his own.

But it wasn't really dangerous.

Then it was Mayr again who came to the window.

And why not try again what has worked before?

Mayr pulled the sprint over the left side, was not consistently attacked and sank the puck with a forceful shot in the left corner.

Ecstasy in the stands as well as on the ice.

A perfect end to a game that really offered everything a hockey heart desires.

Just not for the Rosenheimers.
