Grizi Esport goes to sleep.
Less than two years after launching their electronic sports team, Antoine Griezmann and his brother Theo have announced the closure of their esport structure.
Like many athletes (Tony Parker, Stephen Curry, Yannick Agnel to name a few), the two passionate video game players had embarked on great ambitions in this growing activity.
But the passion of the international and of his brother who recently became a father came up against the harsh economic reality of the sector.
“
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the temporary cessation of all our activities related to esport.
In the current context surrounding the sector as well as our numerous end of contracts, it is more judicious for us to take a break in our activities in order to take a step back on the future of the structure
”, indicates the
press
release.
A promising partnership with OM had been signed
Grizi Esport had recruited several big names in video games in France since January 2020 in order to commit to several flagship titles such as Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite or even Valorant.
A promising partnership had even been completed with OM on the Fifa game.
The Olympian club was represented by the players of the penguin team, the animal mascot of the structure.
But the economic model of esport and the activity have been very seriously shaken by the Covid-19 crisis with the cancellation of many competitions in recent months. The Griezmann brothers had staked a lot on the game Fortnite whose competition network is struggling to structure itself. This announcement comes a few months after the unexpected shutdown of TrainHard Esport, another French team for financial reasons.
“
We are very proud of the progress made since the creation of the project and of the ultra-competitive level that we have managed to achieve with all our teams in such a short period of time.
Thank you to all the members of the structure who allowed us to get to where we are today.
Thank you to all the people who followed and supported us […] See you very soon!
», Concludes the press release which does not close the door to a resumption of activities.
