Scene of the game:

Thomas Meunier played the ball from a half-right position on Julian Brandt and made his way.

One ball contact later he was ready for the flank, his cross was deflected by the Mainz defense towards the edge of the penalty area, from where Marco Reus put the ball with his left into the right angle.

A dream goal after less than three minutes, of course from Reus.

But more on that later.

Result:

Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 (1-0) against Mainz 05 on matchday 8 of the Bundesliga and won their ninth Bundesliga home game in a row.

First half:

The early Dortmund 1-0 was followed by half an hour of total dominance.

BVB, with only one win in the last four home games against Mainz, had 83 percent possession after half an hour.

The hosts also had the two greatest opportunities: Meunier shot just past the left in the 22nd minute, just before the break, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham missed the 2-0 (45th) within seconds.

Favorite opponent 05:

In 20 competitive games against Mainz, BVB captain Reus had collected 13 goals and seven assists. In the 21st encounter, the scorer point number 21 followed thanks to the early hit. The 32-year-old does not have such a good record against any other Bundesliga club. With his 137th Bundesliga goal, he also advanced to 19th place on the all-time goalscorer list - on par with a certain Uwe Seeler.

Second half:

First Manuel Akanji prevented a Mainz counterattack from Karim Onisiwo with a magnificent tackle, then the VAR reported: Silvan Widmer had got the ball in his own penalty area in the run-up to the attack. Referee Daniel Schlager decided on a penalty and Haaland put the penalty in the goal with the approach "a lot helps a lot" (54th). Robin Zentner in the Mainzer Tor was still there, but could not prevent the goal. That he could continue playing unharmed was not taken for granted after this shot. Onisiwo forgave (62nd), Mats Hummels hit the post (66th), Jonathan Burkardt shortened after an unfortunate clarification from BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (87th), Haaland made everything clear after great preparatory work by Bellingham (90th + 4) .

He's back:

Haaland scored eleven goals in seven competitive games before an injury slowed him down. After three weeks of abstinence, he returned to the field against Mainz and increased his yield to 13 goals this season. It was his first goals against the 05er. "He's important to us," said coach Marco Rose before the game and if the understatement of the year is awarded somewhere, Rose should have washed herself into the circle of favorites.

They are back:

after 41,000 spectators were in the stadium at the last home game against FC Augsburg, BVB increased the contingent corona-compatible to more than 60,000 against Mainz. This led to moderately severe problems with admission well into the first half. For the full force of the black and yellow attachment it will need 20,000 more fans, and a slightly more exciting game.

Everyone knows each other:

"He does an outstanding job" Rose had praised his Mainz colleague Bo Svensson in the run-up to the game. Svensson was not only responsible for a sensational second half of the last season, he also stabilized Mainz defensively: In 28 games under his leadership, the 05er conceded more than two goals, both times against Dortmund. Rose and Svensson also have a common defensive past: They played six games at the same time as defenders at FSV Mainz 05. Their relationship does not depend on the outcome: »Friendship persists even when you face each other as an opponent. We had a great time in Mainz and we're on the same wavelength as people, ”said Svensson.

Place in the sun:

Mainz remains in the middle of the table with ten points from eight games, while Dortmund are at the top of the table with 18 points at least until Sunday afternoon.

If Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich (Sunday, 3:30 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de; Stream: DAZN) part ways, BVB would remain leaders.

Outlook:

Mainz will receive FC Augsburg next Friday (8.30 p.m.), BVB will have to work again on Tuesday: Then Ajax Amsterdam will be first in Champions League group C (9 p.m.).
