Stefanos Tsitsipas was surprisingly eliminated tonight (Friday) from the Indian Wells tournament in the quarterfinals.

The Greek, who is ranked third in the world and second in the tournament, lost after two hours and 11 minutes 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4 to Nicolaus Basilshvili of Georgia (36th in the world, 29th in the tournament) and finished his way in the Masters 1,000 tournament with a weak response.

At the next stage Basilshvili will meet Taylor Fritz (31), who caused another surprise and defeated Sasha Zebrav (3) 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 7 (3) at the end of two hours and 22 minutes.

Tsitsipas lost for the first time to Basilshvili after defeating him in the previous two encounters between the two, which were also held on hard surfaces. For the Georgian this was his first ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the 1,000 Masters Tournament and now he will also appear in the semi-finals at least. For Basilshvili 2021 it is already a great year after winning the Doha and Munich tournaments during it. It was his first win against a player ranked among the top five in the world since defeating Zebrav in Hamburg in 2019. Basilshvili is the first Georgian in the semi-finals of the 1,000 Masters Tournament since Irkelli to Badza, who did so in 2004.

In the game that completed the semi-final picture, American Fritz closed an account with Zebrav, who ousted him at the last Wimbledon tournament.

Fritz came back from a 5-2 deficit in the final set and saved two game points during it, on the way to improving his best performance at Indian Wells.

This is the American's second win of his career against an opponent from the top five in the world, when the previous one came against Dominic Tim in 2019.

Now, he will also be able to "take revenge" on Basilshvili, who defeated him in the semi-finals of the Doha tournament.

He too was surprisingly dismissed.

Badusa and Azarenka in the final of the women's tournament

In the women, the semi-finals were held tonight, at the end of which Paulo Badusa and Victoria Azarenka secured their place in the battle for the title.

The Spaniard (21) defeated the Tunisian Jabor Jabor (3) 3: 6, 3: 6, while the Belarusian mimicked the deficit and defeated Yelena Ostapenko 6: 3, 3: 6, 5: 7.
