The times at the marathon in Amsterdam were fast.
Women's winner Angela Tanui, 29, from Kenya stayed in the course record time of 2:17:57 hours only 14 seconds over the world best time, which her compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei had run two weeks ago in London.
After the race, the winner spoke briefly about her success, then the conversation was directed to the long-distance runner Agnes Jebet Tirop, who was found dead on Wednesday.
She wanted to commemorate the Kenyan team-mate with a white ribbon attached to her starting number.
She died horribly, Tanui said in a broken voice.
After Tirop's violent death, the Kenyan police have now taken her husband into custody.
Emmanuel Rotich is suspected of stabbing the Olympic participant and world record holder.
Tirop was found dead on Wednesday with multiple stab wounds in the bedroom of her home in Iten, western Kenya.
Numerous running stars of the country train at the high altitude, including the Amsterdam winner Tanui.
Tirop was 25 years old.
"The murder of a champion," wrote the Daily Nation.
In the men's race in Amsterdam, the 30-year-old Ethiopian Tamirat Tola also set a course record in 2:03:39 hours.
The winner Tola was second in the marathon World Championship in 2017 and won Olympic bronze over 10,000 meters in Rio in 2016.
