Britain's Cameron Norrie won the ATP tournament in Indian Wells, USA last night, beating Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) in the final.

At 26, Norrie was in her sixth final of the season, and clinched her second title.

A performance that will allow him to jump from 26th to 16th place in the world ranking, the best ranking of his career.

He also becomes the new British number one, ahead of Daniel Evans.

Struggling early in the game, Norrie was led a set to zero by Georgian Basilashvili, who even made the break at the start of the second set.

The latter then multiplied the errors (49 unforced errors throughout the game), which allowed Norrie to reverse the situation to finally lift the first big trophy of his career.

The Masters in sight

The first Briton to win in this Masters 1000, Cameron Norrie had, until this 2021 edition, still disturbed by the health crisis, never won a single match at Indian Wells.

His performance, which allows him to point to 16th in the world, could even offer him a ticket to the Masters at the end of the season, Norrie being currently tenth in the Race.

The women's final was also marked by a first.

Paula Badosa, one of the revelations this season on the women's circuit, won against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.

At 23, the Spaniard, 87th in the world ranking a year ago, climbs to 13th place.
