Encouraging season opener for Washington and Danny Abdia: The Wizards kicked off tonight (Wednesday-Thursday) the 2021/22 season with an 83-98 away win over Toronto, in a one-sided game that illustrated the team’s potential for improvement under the scepter of new coach Wes Ansald Jr..

The Wizards dominated the game unchallenged, opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter, ran even further in the second quarter and reached a record 29-point lead, until they took a foot off the gas in the final minutes.

It was an encouraging night for Danny Abdia as well personally.

The Israeli forward played a regular season game in the NBA for the first time since the injury that sidelined him in April, and received relatively extensive credit from the new coach.

He rose from the bench for 21 minutes and finished them with 8 points (3 from 3 from the field including 1 from 1 from three, 1 from 2 from penalties) along with 7 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, assists and a loss.

Abdia displayed good ability especially on defense, and was part of the quintet that created Washington’s escape in the second quarter, from which the Raptors had no way back.

Abdia made it to the floor for the first time after six minutes as the Wizards' first substitute, and soon came on board with a lay-up assist from Raul Neto.

He later scored a free-kick from Bradley Bill's assist, and in general all the players seemed to enjoy the team's new style of play, which last season was based mostly on individual talent but this season should emphasize more elements of delivery and movement.

The defense, as mentioned, also looked much better.

While the opponent on the other side looked scattered and confused, the credit still goes to the Wizards' defense, who have conceded the fewest points in the game since 2017, lowered Toronto to a very low percentage (30 percent from the field, 20 percent from three) and looked energetic and determined.

Bradley Bill, who was in doubt for the opening game, played and finished as Washington’s standout scorer with 23 points on 7 of 19 from the field.

Montreux Harrell looked excellent as the inside player adding energy from the bench, finishing with 22 and 9 rebounds, and also newcomers Spencer Dinwidi (13 and 6 assists) and Kyle Kozma (11 and 15 rebounds) were solid.

Again the prominent Washington slinger, this time with more efficiency.

The Raptors will take nothing from this game except for Scotty Barnes' sparks (Photo: Reuters)

The Raptors, on the other hand, can take very little from this game, except for sparks by Scotty Barnes, the rookie who was selected 4th in the draft and marked as a potential star, and finished the night with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

O. Anonobi has reached double digits with 11 and 10 rebounds, but the Raptors will try to forget about this game as soon as possible.

Washington and Abdia will hope to continue the momentum in the second game of the season, on the night between Friday and Saturday against Indiana.
