After a game by the English football club Newcastle United, the police have started an investigation into a controversial banner.

Fans of the opposing club Crystal Palace had criticized human rights violations in Saudi Arabia and thus the takeover of Newcastle United by a majority Saudi consortium on Saturday.

The police said they had been notified of an "offensive banner".

Any allegations of racist insults would be taken very seriously, surveys are currently being carried out, the Metropolitan Police wrote on Twitter.

The Premier League had recently approved the takeover of Newcastle United by a consortium with Saudi participation, as they do not believe that the club is under the control of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia's public investment fund is said to hold 80 percent of the consortium, which is now the majority owner of the association.

In addition, the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is accused of serious human rights violations, is the most influential man in the fund.

Because the fund is viewed as "separate from the state", a takeover was permitted from the league's point of view.

On the banner was a man in Arab clothing with a bloody sword in his hands.

The words "terrorism", "beheadings", "murder", "censorship and persecution" are ticked, the whole thing is titled "Premier League owner test".

A fan association criticized the approved takeover in a statement, which reveals the "soulless agenda of the league," which is all about profit.

The game against Crystal Palace ended 1: 1 (0: 0) on Saturday.

Newcastle remain penultimate even after the second game after taking over the club.

It was also the first game under interim coach Graeme Jones after Steve Bruce left the club as coach on Wednesday - allegedly by mutual agreement.

The search for a successor is ongoing, according to the club.
