Without a coach Nagelsmann, but with a number of non-sporting issues, Bayern traveled to Mönchengladbach. The record cup winner had a memorable day there. And joker Anthony Modeste shot Cologne further.

Surprise in the DFB Cup: record cup winners Bayern Munich failed again in the second round.

At Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern negotiated a violent 0: 5 (0: 3) bankruptcy.

In the other game between two Bundesliga clubs, 1. FC Köln won 2-0 (0-0) at VfB Stuttgart.

Hannover 96 reached the round of 16 with a 3-0 (1-0) win against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

In preparation for the game in Mönchengladbach, non-athletic issues such as Joshua Kimmichs' vaccination status or the legal disputes of Lucas Hernández dominated Bayern. Nevertheless, it was astonishing how badly the record champions were in Borussia-Park. Ramy Bensebaini increased Manu Koné's lead in the second minute with a brace (15th, 20th) to make it 3-0 early on, but the lead could have been even higher.

Central defender Dayot Upamecano in particular had a bitter evening: After a long ball, the summer team lost a duel with Embolo, who hit the fourth straight through the legs of Neuer (51st). And it didn't get better for Bayern, where Julian Nagelsmann was still missing after his corona infection. After a pass from 18-year-old Luca Netz, Embolo pushed in alone in front of Manuel Neuer (57th). Bayern were lucky that the defeat was not even greater. But even so it was the second elimination in the second round in a row: In January Bayern surprisingly failed to Holstein Kiel.

1. FC Köln are also in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

Anthony Modeste once again became the match winner, who took the lead less than 60 seconds after his substitution against VfB Stuttgart (72nd) and increased it to 2-0 shortly after (77th).

After an uneventful first half, both teams only tried harder to attack after the break.

After Modeste's hit, Stuttgart had nothing more to add.

In the duel between the two second division teams, Fortuna Düsseldorf did not actually make a bad game in the first round, but conceded the deficit: Sebastian Kerk initiated the attack himself and completed after preparatory work by Maximilian Beier from the penalty area (30th).

In the second half, Hanover became more passive at times and was lucky that they did not concede a dream goal to equalize: After a cross from the right side, Jakub Piotrowski jumped into the air and hit the bar with a side pull (68th).

But the Düsseldorf team didn't manage to do more, instead Beier scored the decision with a double pack (90th, 90th + 6).

For Hannover it is the first cup round of 16 since the 2016/2017 season.
