VfL Wolfsburg achieved their first victory on the fourth day of the Champions League.
Two weeks after the 1: 3 defeat in Salzburg, the Bundesliga team won 2: 1 (1: 1) at home against the Austrian champions.
The U21 European champions Ridle Baku (3rd minute) and Lukas Nmecha (60th) scored for Wolfsburg, Maxmilian Wöber (30th) equalized for RB in the meantime.
At the Champions League debut of the new Wolfsburg head coach Florian Kohfeldt, VfL had to survive the first moment of shock after a good minute: Salzburg's Noah Okafor dropped in the penalty area for his strike partner Karim Adeyemi. The German national player probably only missed the early tour and shot past the goal because he was put under pressure by Maximilian Arnold (2nd).
Instead, it was Wolfsburg who met early: Yannick Gerhardt played a flat pass across the Salzburg penalty area on the left almost at the level of the baseline, which reached Baku at the far post.
Wolfsburg's right wing player only had to push in (3rd).
Afterwards, VfL hardly gave any chances and went consistently into the duels - sometimes too consistently: Maximilian Wöber used a promising free-kick position to circle the ball directly into Koen Casteels' goal (31st).
Nmecha's run continues
While striker Wout Weghorst, part of the Wolfsburg starting line-up for the first time since his corona infection, missed the renewed lead after Gerhardt's cross (37th), next man Nmecha confirmed his strong form: Already in the first leg and at the weekend against Leverkusen was the top scorer of the U21s -European Championship was successful, Nmecha scored his third goal in the last four competitive games by volley from an acute angle in the second half (60th).
It was also the winning goal, the Salzburg final offensive survived the VfL unscathed.
In the group G table, Wolfsburg (five points) is closer to Salzburg (eight points).
Lille OSC (two points) and Sevilla FC (three points) will play against each other in the evening.
