Peiting - Similar to last winter, it was also rather quiet around the cross-country skiers in summer.

The Peitinger Korbinian Heiland, who started for SC Partenkirchen, did not allow himself any leisure, but worked meticulously.

After all, he wants to start his first season in the U23 age group in top shape.

The two traditional summer tests of the cross-country skiers went this year in a slimmed down form. As in the previous year, the summer performance control (SLK) was held as a virtual 3000-meter run. Only the central performance control (ZLK) took place in mid-September in Oberhof (Thuringia) in the usual form. A cross-country run as well as a sprint and an individual race on roller skis were on the program.

Heiland limited himself to the 17 kilometer long individual race in the classic technique.

"My shin is currently not fit enough for the cross-country run, and I skipped the sprint the previous week because of a slight cold," said the 20-year-old, explaining his decision to rely on just one performance comparison.

But he did a good job with fifth place.

"I'm satisfied, especially since the race was largely a pure pushing competition."

Korbinian Heiland starts his first U23 season

In general, Savior is quite happy with his preparation. Since he finished school in the spring, he has had more time for training. He needs them too, because from this season the SCP athlete will start in the U23, i.e. in the Continental Cup together with the men. "This is another big leap in development, where significantly more performance is expected than with the juniors," said the Peitinger. He knows what is important. Because in the end he is in the preliminary stages of the World Cup. For the sports soldier - he has been part of the Sonthofen Sports Promotion Group since September - this is probably not an issue this winter: "My focus is clearly on the Continental Cup, and my goal is to qualify for the U23 World Championships."

That alone would be a strong performance in the first of three U23 years. The native of Peitinger invests numerous hours of training alone or with his team, LG Ib, in his adopted home of Oberstdorf. There are also courses in Oberhof (Thuringia), Lavazè (Val di Fiemme) and currently on the Dachstein glacier. The first few days of snow made Heiland really want to go into winter: "It's a great feeling to run cross-country again and to have snow under your skis instead of standing on roller skis."

Therefore, he is now looking forward to the next long snow course in November in Livigno (Italy) and hopes to be able to train on snow in the Allgäu afterwards.

Because even if everything still seems calm at the moment and the shape is still cooking on the back burner, the firewood is already ready for the really hot training weeks.

At the beginning of December, at the first competition in the Continental Cup, the race form has to be right anyway.
