Mercato: despite Newcastle's interest, Unai Emery should stay at Villareal

Newcastle is moving away for the former PSG coach, yet tipped to succeed Steve Bruce, sacked more than two weeks ago.

Unai Emery's mid-season transfer from Villarreal to Newcastle is unlikely to ever happen.

For the moment, anyway.

Approached by the English club - recently bought by a Saudi fund - to replace Steve Bruce on the bench, sacked on October 20 after a catastrophic start to the championship (19th in the Premier League), the Spanish tactician reacted this Tuesday evening after the victory 2-0 for his team over the Young Boys of Bern, in the Champions League.

“There was interest from Newcastle but I spent the whole day thinking about this game. There is no offer, said the former Arsenal and PSG coach. I am focused on Villarreal, I am very happy. In principle, I will be in charge next Sunday against Getafe. I didn't say no (in Newcastle). If there is something more concrete, I would listen and talk to the president (Fernando Roig) ”.

According to Guillem Balague, Spanish journalist specializing in Spanish football and columnist for Le Parisien, Emery's situation is very clear: “He will reject Newcastle's approach.

There was a huge unnecessary pressure and not a clear vision on the future of the club (...) After being very interested in knowing more, he decided to stop everything.

His family, friends and players (those from Villarreal) have asked him to stay.

The club insisted they were building a team in their image and had everyone's respect.

"

Sources say he felt the new owners lacked a clear vision for the club 👀 # NUFC #bbcfootball

Unai Emery, winner of three Europa League with Sevilla FC, led Villarreal last season to a historic victory in the same competition, the first major trophy of the “yellow submarine”.

But the sequel was less convincing.

Villarreal are currently only 13th in La Liga, having won just two of their opening 11 league games.
