Weilheim - After a year of corona-related break, the German Gymnastics Association had announced national championships for the seniors again.

It was clear to Michael Krocka and Stefan Schmitz that they would compete there.

And the two gymnasts from TSV Weilheim didn't care that they had to make a long journey.

The German championship including the German Cup took place in Troisdorf near Cologne.

Ultimately, the effort paid off for the duo: Both returned to the Oberland with two medals each in their luggage.

In the age group “55 to 59 years” Schmitz won gold and Michael Krocka won silver.

Together they won the team classification in the Germany Cup.

Neither of them had expected such a success, as it says in a press release. Schmitz in particular did not really know what his shape was like. He had suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the past year, and during the lockdown phases he had also suffered quite a training deficit. In Troisdorf, however, he got off to a real run. Schmitz achieved the highest value in the field of twelve participants on bars. On the ground and on the jump - he had rarely trained on both machines because of his injury - he impressed with his clean performances. Besides Krocka, he was the only one on the pommel horse who succeeded in an exercise without relegation. Schmitz won all-round gold.

Krocka was also satisfied with his performance: The 59-year-old from Weilheim - who has been a trainer at TSV for three decades - focused less on difficulty and more on clean execution in his exercises.

Among other things, he shone on the floor with a clean split combined with a Swiss handstand - for this he received the highest rating on this device.

He also diligently collected points on the pommel horse and parallel bars, which earned him individual silver.

With the “Team Bayern” Schmitz and Krocka won the gold medal in the Germany Cup in the “45+” class.

For the seventh time in a row Bayern were successful - a series that was unique to date.

In addition to the two TSV gymnasts, Roland Hagner, Wilfried Hofer (both KTV Ries) and Martin Korneli (TG Veitshöchheim) belonged to the successful troupe.
