Italy: Naples to play with Maradona jerseys on the first anniversary of his death

Napoli will evolve with jerseys celebrating Diego Maradona in their next three Serie A games, to mark the first anniversary of the star's death on November 25, 2020, Napoli announced on Saturday.

The stylized face of Maradona, who gave Naples their only two Italian league titles in 1987 and 1990, appears on this collector's jersey, a photo of which the club posted on social media.

Napoli players, currently leading the Italian Championship with AC Milan, will wear it in the next three Serie A games against Hellas Verona on Sunday at home, Inter Milan on November 21 at San Siro and Lazio Rome on November 28, also at home in their stadium renamed last year by the name of Diego Maradona.

“A year after his death, Napoli thus honors a great champion, symbol of an era, and icon of world football,” the club wrote on its site.

These jerseys will also be sold in three different colors, in only 1926 copies for each of them, a figure retained in reference to the year the club was founded (1926).

“Part of the proceeds will be used for charitable initiatives,” the club said.

Diego Maradona wore the colors of Naples from 1984 and 1991, becoming an idol of the city.

His number 10 has not been assigned for years.
