Mexican GP Tops / Flops: Verstappen teaches the lesson, Mercedes in an emergency

2021-11-07T22:19:22.598Z

The demonstration of Max Verstappen and the big blow of Ferrari, but also the Black Sunday of McLaren and the difficulties of Mercedes: find the tops and the flops after the Grand Prix of Mexico.

TOPS

Verstappen in demonstration

Mister 50%. In Mexico, the Dutchman signed his ninth success of the season in eighteen races. Impressive. This victory, he acquired it at the start. Third on the grid, he took off ideally, took advantage of the suction and made a fantastic first braking to get out of the first corner. From that point on, the heavy lifting was done and he just had to cover Lewis Hamilton's strategy to snatch his 19th career victory. Max Verstappen leaves with 19 points ahead of the Briton from Mexico (the standings here). An almost ideal weekend, also validated by the return of Red Bull to Mercedes to the manufacturers. The Austrians are only one point behind the Germans, also thanks to the third place of Sergio Perez, his third podium in a row.

Gasly gives AlphaTauri a smile

We haven't seen him a lot, but in Formula 1, it's often a positive sign.

Fifth on the grid, he took advantage of the chaotic start to scratch a position and then never let go of his fourth place.

A very solid result for the Frenchman, author of a new impeccable race, which benefits his team.

With the Normand's twelve points, AlphaTauri sticks to Alpine in the constructors' standings in fifth position with 106 units.

Ferrari, the big shot

La Scuderia signed a nice group shot with fifth place for Charles Leclerc and sixth for Carlos Sainz in Mexico.

A good weekend therefore for Ferrari, who made the most of McLaren's bad Sunday to take third place in the constructors' championship, the declared goal of the Italian team.

Vettel, Raikkonen and Alonso, the grandpas are resisting

The three old men were to their advantage on Sunday in Mexico City.

Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) confirmed his return to form seen in the United States with a seventh place.

Eighth, Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo) enters for the fourth time in the points of the season, for his farewell tour, while Fernando Alonso (Alpine), ninth, finds the top 10 after two difficult races.

FLOPS

Mercedes still in trouble

The urgency is becoming clearer for the German team. In lack of rhythm, Lewis Hamilton was satisfied with the second place, without ever being able to fight against Max Verstappen. For his part, Valtteri Bottas, the poleman, had a black Sunday. Hit at the first corner by Daniel Ricciardo and propelled into a spin, the Finn spent his race in the exhausts… of the Australian, but above all far from the points. Relegated to two laps, the future Alfa Romeo driver even stopped four times to steal the best lap point from Verstappen. His only success of the day. These ups and downs cost Mercedes dearly as Red Bull returned to a point among constructors as Lewis Hamilton left Mexico 19 points behind in the world championship standings on Verstappen, four races from the end of the season.

McLaren in the tough in Mexico

From Turkey, the gap kept shrinking.

McLaren is now fourth in the constructors' standings, overtaken by Ferrari.

The British team only collected one point in Mexico with the tenth place of Lando Norris, who started from the back of the grid following an engine penalty.

Obviously a very disappointing result, but it was difficult to do better, especially after Daniel Ricciardo's accident.

The Australian was McLaren's best card on Sunday, but his collision with Bottas at the first corner turned plans upside down.

Twelfth, Ricciardo missed and McLaren went to Brazil 13.50 points behind Ferrari.
