World Cup 2022: Joshua Cavallo, the first footballer to come out, is "afraid" of playing for the World Cup in Qatar

Australian midfielder Joshua Cavallo recently made headlines for having the courage to come out and become the first active footballer to openly embrace his homosexuality.

The young Australian is taking advantage of his new status to be the spokesperson for many who stigmatize the homophobia present in many countries of the Persian Gulf.

Starting of course with Qatar, which will host the next World Cup in winter 2022. Cavallo therefore told the English newspaper The

Guardian

, this Monday on the occasion of a podcast, that he would hesitate to go to Qatar for the next World Cup because of the repression of homosexuals in this country.

At 21, the midfielder plays for Adelaide United in the A-League.

He has already evolved with the selection of the Australian U 20 but never yet with the team A. Cavallo explains that he would be "very afraid" to go to Qatar if Australia qualified and he was selected to participate at the tournament.

"I read something like that they (Editor's note: Qataris) pronounce the death penalty for homosexuals in Qatar, so it's something I'm very afraid of and I wouldn't really want to go to Qatar for that.

"

Since being chosen to host the World Cup in 2010, Qatar has come under heavy criticism for its treatment of LGBT people, as well as for its record on women's rights and worker protection. Last year, a report by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) explained that according to unidentified sources, the death penalty could potentially punish consensual same-sex relationships in Qatar.

Qatar 2022 World Cup chief executive Nasser al-Khater said in 2019 that "any fan, of any gender, (sexual) orientation, religion, race (should) be assured that Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world - and they will all be welcome here ”.

He stressed, however, that "public displays of affection are frowned upon, it is not part of our culture - but it extends to everyone (heterosexuals too)".

Still, the words of Joshua Cavallo should provoke many reactions including, we hope that of the international federation (FIFA) rather discreet on this subject ...
