Two thirds of Germans reject FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan for a soccer World Cup every two years and, in return, plead for maintaining the previous four-year cycle.

Two thirds of Germans reject FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan for a soccer World Cup every two years and, in return, plead for maintaining the previous four-year cycle.

Wolfsburg - This is the result of a representative survey by the Yougov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency.

Only eleven percent of those questioned were in favor of a reduction to a two-year cycle.

Three percent do not want the major event every two or four years and 21 percent of those surveyed have no opinion on the topic.

The majority of Germans are following the position expressed by national coach Hansi Flick, DFB director Oliver Bierhoff and almost all other top representatives of German football that a shortening would not be desirable.

“It doesn't make sense to keep inflating everything, to add new games or to rearrange things just to keep growing or to have more income,” Bierhoff told RTL.

FIFA President Infantino would have liked to have his World Cup project voted on this year.

The resistance from associations and leagues from Europe and South America is too great.

The decision may be made at the congress of the world association on March 31, 2022 in Doha.

There is also a compromise with the introduction of a worldwide Nations League as a new competition.
