Gerard signed for two and a half years in the ranks of Aston Villa after the team decided to fire Dean Smith following the 1-0 loss to Southampton, which was the fifth consecutive loss in the English league.

Denmark national team coach Caspar Yulmand disqualified himself from being nominated for the job, and 41-year-old Gerard, who was mentioned along with Roberto Martinez as someone who could replace Smith, was the one who eventually signed.
