Human Rights Watch wants the sponsors of the Games, which take place in four months, to speak up. The sponsors of the Winter Olympics in Beijing must put pressure on the Chinese regime and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in terms of human rights, pleaded Friday the Human Rights Watch (HRW) association. The sponsors of the Winter Olympics in Beijing must put pressure on the Chinese regime and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in terms of human rights, pleaded Friday the Human Rights Watch (HRW) association.

"There are only three months until the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, but the companies that sponsor them are silent on how they are exerting their influence to combat China's appalling record" on human rights. Man, denounced Sophie Richardson, China director of HRW.

"These companies are missing an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment" to human rights "and risk being associated with the Olympic Games marred by censorship and repression," she added.

Several human rights organizations have accused Beijing of having interned in Xinjiang (northwest) at least one million Uyghur Muslims in "re-education camps".

Beijing denies this figure and speaks of "vocational training centers" to fight Islamism and separatism in this province which had been affected by attacks attributed to Uyghurs.

Chinese government "violates commitments" made

The Olympic flame was handed over to China at the end of October during an official ceremony in Greece disrupted by pro-Tibet activists.

HRW calls on the International Olympic Committee to recognize that the Chinese government is "violating human rights commitments" made to host the Olympics.

Last month, a senior IOC official said it was not in the committee's remit to hold a state to account in this matter.

The top 15 sponsors of the Olympics are GE, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, Samsung, P&G, Toyota, Visa, Airbnb, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Allianz, Dow and Alibaba.

Only people residing in China will be able to attend the Games scheduled for February 4-20.

"We should not expect the Chinese government to respect" human rights during the Olympics, writes the New York-based organization.

"Any demonstration or speech critical of the government, on the part of Chinese citizens or foreign athletes, can lead to censorship or reprisals," she warns.
