So much in advance: Regardless of whether you think the coat is beautiful or not: it was always an eye-catcher.
Background: A good four months after his last game, Joachim Löw was officially retired from the German Football Association as national coach.
26,000 spectators in the sold out VW arena in Wolfsburg greeted Löw with loud applause and shouts of "Jogi, Jogi" before the World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein on Thursday evening.
In addition, there were several former world champions on the pitch.
Among them were, for example, Miroslav Klose, Benedikt Höwedes, Lukas Podolski - and also Mats Hummels.
At the very public appearance he wore a green-beige-checked winter coat, the color of which was perfectly coordinated with his turtleneck sweater;
which obviously did not go down well with all observers.
Record national player Lothar Matthäus said on RTL: "Mats Hummel's coat - I wouldn't wear it, daring."
"Poldi made fun of his coat a bit, and then Mats was so easily insecure and asked whether it was that good," said Müller to the same broadcaster - thus clearing up the small talk with Hummels before kick-off.
"I meant: 'He can wear it.' Everything is fine," said Müller.
And: "It has to be a little cooler."
By the way, at the end of the game it was 9-0 (4-0) for Germany.
The German national soccer team won the sixth World Cup qualifying game under Hansi Flick - giving the new national coach the only start record.
Löw, in turn, spoke that evening about a possible return to professional football.
"It's quite possible," he said.
“After such a long time, it took me half a year or maybe a year to gain some distance and to orientate myself.
The desire gradually comes back and the motivation. "
