Russian Daniil Medvedev, ranked second in the world, overturned his delay in front of Poland's Hubert Hurkacz to win at the start of the campaign to defend his title at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy for the first time.
Medvedev, who won four titles this year, most recently the US Open at the expense of Serbian Novak Djokovic, needed two hours to overcome the obstacle of his Polish opponent, who could not maintain his lead to beat him and win two sets to one, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The "red" group competitions continue today with the Italian Matteo Berrettini and German Alexander Zverev.
In the first "white" group, world number one Djokovic will face the Danish Casper Ruud tomorrow, while the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas will play the Russian Andrei Rublev.
