Saint-Denis: work on the Olympic aquatic center officially launched

2021-11-15T16:39:23.153Z

Visiting this Monday in Seine-Saint-Denis, Prime Minister Jean Castex laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Olympic aquatic center

“A building that fits perfectly into the environment, built in a young and dynamic department (…), an architecture that responds to that of the Stade de France…” At the time of presenting the model of the future Olympic aquatic center (CAO) , the architects of Venhoeven CS and Ateliers 2/3/4 / do not fail to highlight the ambitions of the project.

Provided by Bouygues Bâtiments, the work promises to be innovative with the use of wooden materials, digital boilers and photovoltaic panels, which give it "an environmental example". The architects praise the multiple glass walls, which will allow different users - we can swim but also play paddle, 5-a-side football or even do a fitness session - "to be linked".

On the former Engie site in Saint-Denis, the excavators have already worked, but this Monday was the opportunity for the stakeholders of the Paris 2024 project to officially lay the first stone of a project, the cost of which is estimated at 147 million euros.

"This project embodies France's desire to be at the rendezvous of the 2024 Olympic Games, to play the most beautiful Games that have ever existed", enthuses Patrick Ollier, the president of the Greater Paris Metropolis.

Keep schedule and budget

The latter even imagines, during the Paris Games, the installation "of a second flame (

Editor's note: this one is in fact unique

) on the catwalk", connecting the future Olympic aquatic center to the Stade de France, to "illustrate the link between the two sites ”.

During the Olympics, the CAO will host the water polo (except the finals), diving and synchronized swimming events, while the races will take place in a provisional Olympic aquatic stadium, which was to be set up in front of the COA, before moving to La Défense Arena. In its legacy phase, in addition to a pool reserved for learning, a 70-meter pool with removable walls (making it possible to create several pools or to modify the depth) will make it possible to increase the number of practices.

At the origin of the Olympic aquatic center project in Saint-Denis, when he was interministerial delegate to the Olympic Games - the Olympic swimming pool was initially planned in Aubervilliers and then went through different formats -, Jean Castex did not failed to point out the many constraints to be observed: keeping the schedule (the CAO should be delivered in early 2024 but Bouygues estimates that it is ahead) and the budget (6.5 billion euros, including 1.5 in public money);

transparency and consultation (the Prime Minister considering that it is necessary to take into account the populations who have become more demanding in this area);

safety, athletic success and heritage.
