2022 World Cup: understand everything about the dams that will be played next March

2021-11-16T10:03:22.551Z

If the Blues have managed to land a direct ticket to the World Cup, this is not the case for Italy and Portugal who will have to play two play-offs to hope to see Qatar.

Once rather simple, the dam system now takes on the appearance of a gas factory.

In the past, each team that finished 2nd in its qualifying group had to play a round-trip jump-off against another 2nd in the group.

This classic formula has been replaced by another more convoluted system, inaugurated for qualifying for Euro 2020. From now on, the qualifiers for the play-offs face not one but two opponents.

No more round-trip confrontations, now up to two dry matches.

Finally, finishing 2nd in your qualifying group is no longer the only option to access the play-offs.

The new format involves results in… League of Nations.

Explanations.

How do these dams work?

These confrontations, which will take place from March 24 to 29, 2022, will take the form of “semi-finals” and “finals”. The “seeded” teams will play their semi-final at home. This status is granted to the best performing teams during the qualification campaign. It essentially depends on the number of points scored and the number of goals scored. Concretely, Italy and Portugal failed to qualify directly but still benefit from this status which ensures them a semi-final a priori affordable. On the other hand, the concept of the seed is shattered once the semi-finals have passed. For the finals, a draw will determine which team will receive and all remaining teams are likely to face each other. Thereby,a Portugal / Italy "final" is quite possible.

Who will attend?

Besides Italy and Portugal, all the other 2nd in the group will take part in these jump-offs. For now, Scotland, Russia, Sweden and Poland are among the top seeds. Only for the moment because there are still games to be played this Tuesday evening and some teams could come and steal the seeded status from others depending on their result. Suppose the current rankings remain unchanged after the last matches. This would offer a play-off ticket to Turkey, Finland, North Macedonia and Wales as a non-seed. Austria and the Czech Republic would complete this picture. However, Austria finished 4th in their qualifying group and the Czech Republic is currently 3rd in their group. So why such an anomaly? Because Austria and the Czech Republic are among the top two group in the Nations League. According to the new rule, this status grants them a place in play-offs. In reality, even if the Czech Republic were to take 2nd place in Group E under the beard of the Welsh, the latter would still qualify in the play-off because they are the best group winners in the Nations League ahead of the Austria and the Czech Republic. Clearly, there is no longer any real stake in this group E.even if the Czech Republic were to take 2nd place in group E to the beard of the Welsh, the latter would still be qualified in the jump-off because they are the best group winners in the Nations League ahead of Austria and the Czech Republic. With this new system, the road to the World Cup for teams not directly qualified becomes steeper.

The risk of a great football nation missing out on the World Cup in Qatar is now much more likely.
