How do you behave after recovery or vaccination?

Tips from athletes and coaches

- More than one and a half years after the outbreak of the pandemic, Corona remains a determining factor in sporting life.

Covid is currently the cause that athletes have to pause their hobby - either due to an infection or a vaccination.

But how do those affected feel when they return to their fitness after a few days of rest, and what should be considered when restarting?

We spoke to various associations about their experiences with corona diseases and vaccinations.

For example, TSV Erding's dolphins had infected members. Department head Katrin Liebig (45) reports on swimmers with milder courses with cold symptoms who were able to return to training relatively easily. However, a female member has to struggle with classic long-term consequences. “The units are a little shorter with her. Otherwise it can't do that in terms of ventilation, ”says Liebig. After their recovery, the affected dolphins started with fewer training sessions - instead of seven times a week, only half. “After about eight weeks they were back to their old level,” explains the head of department.

Corona cases have already occurred among the footballers at FC Moosinning - including people who have been vaccinated twice, as department head Rupert Lanzinger says. How long the players pause is very different. “Some stopped for a relatively long time because they weren't feeling so good, but suddenly things picked up again quickly,” says Lanzinger. The 63-year-old was also infected with Covid-19. "It was like the flu, but it's different for everyone."

Gradually, after his recovery, he started cycling and walking again.

When active footballers return to training, Lanzinger points out that the athletic deficit must be taken into account.

"You should definitely not start too extreme again and build up slowly," he advises, "for example with running units or shorter training hours."

The Kickboxing Club (KBV) Erding already had infected competitive athletes in its ranks. Most of these squad athletes had mild progress, according to head coach Peter Lutzny. Before returning to training, everyone had to undergo a pulmonary function test. Lutzny reports on one of his best fighters, Tatjana Obermeier, who was a little short of breath after her illness. His tip for those who have recovered: “Take care of your lungs and start with relaxed training. For example, running training, where you can talk while you are doing it, so your heart rate is well below 130. ”Obermeier also started with jogging and two-week shadow boxing, so only with an imaginary partner. After about two months, the performance level of the vice world champion normalized again, reports Lutzny. The 62-year-old also advises infected people from other sports to have an easy start: "I would not underestimate it, the risk would be too great for me."

How quickly you recover sportily after a corona infection, "cannot be said in general terms and also depends on the previous fitness level," explains Simon Klawe (38) from Sportpark Schollbach.

The head of the fitness department recommends rest or - if you still want to and can move - yoga or Pilates if you have a positive test.

“So no dynamic courses, but rather static ones to strengthen the deep muscles.” As a restart after recovery, Klawe advises strength-endurance exercises with light weights and more repetitions.

Experienced athletes could then train two to three times a week, beginners about once or twice.

Ute Attenberger from TC Oberding does not know any infected people from her outdoor sport tennis.

As with normal flu, the 58-year-old chairwoman advises you to be completely calm with a positive test.

Gerhard Mühlenbeck (53), handball department head of TSV Taufkirchen, is also not aware of any corona cases in his team or other clubs.

The sports experts also advise caution when returning to training after a corona vaccination.

The tips are often similar to the advice given earlier in the event of infection.

The Erdinger dolphins only returned to the water after at least ten days.

Department head Liebig is not aware that someone had to take a longer break due to major vaccine side effects.

Usually a few days after the immunization, the members of Sportpark Schollbach would have re-entered the studio.

says Klawe and points out that “don't go straight back to your performance limit”, but rather increase your weight from around the second to third day of training.

Also in the week of the vaccination, many handball players from Taufkirchen returned to training.

“Some of them could still feel their arm a little, but that was all,” says Mühlenbeck about the side effects.

Since she was affected by fever, among other things, Attenberger from TC Oberding took a good week off after the vaccination.

After that, however, tennis worked again without restrictions, says the 58-year-old.

Other members would have played again after a few days.

Lutzny got his first AstraZeneca vaccination a little bit tired. After two days of bed rest with a fever, the kickboxing trainer felt very weak for a longer period of time. He paused several weeks in the online training for members at the time, where he would have had to actively participate. His competitors started running again about a week after the immunization. Initially, however, many would have complained of arm pain or “they constantly had a feeling of tiredness during training,” reports the KBV trainer and advises all athletes to recover sufficiently after the corona vaccination: “It makes no sense to start up too early and then to fall back again. ”Lanzinger from FC Moosinning also points out that one should pay attention to one's own body awareness:“ Every type is different, and everyone has their own responsibility for themselves. ”
