The two-time Grand Slam winner Garbiñe Muguruza has won the tennis players season finale for the first time.
The 28-year-old prevailed 6: 3, 7: 5 against tournament surprise Anett Kontaveit from Estonia in Guadalajara, Mexico.
"I'm just happy that I've proven again that I can be the best, the maestra, as they say in Spanish," said the former world number one.
For Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016 and won Wimbledon in 2017, it is the culmination of a comeback year.
After three years beyond the top 10, she has also won the tournaments in Dubai and Chicago.
She will probably end the year as the third best tennis player in the world.
“That puts me in a good position for next year and gives me energy,” said Muguruza. “My team and I have worked hard, and it is paying off.
And it shows that we are doing the right thing. "
Muguruza is also the first Spaniard to win the WTA finals.
Before her, only Arantxa Sánchez Vicario had made it into the final.
There she drew the short straw against Steffi Graf in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1993.
