"That was one of the most blatant wrong decisions I've ever seen"

Werder could talk about Markus initial vaccination scandal, Schalke about Simon Terodde's goal record. But after the top game in the second division there was only one topic: Why did Werder get a penalty seconds before the end?

The contact tracking of the game:

With every slow motion, the contact that had existed between Schalke's youngster Henning Matriciani and the Bremen joker Roger Assalé seemed to have been less of the cause of the Werder professional falling. Assalé would not have been the first striker to give in to gravity seconds before the end of the game to somehow take another penalty. What set Assalé apart from most of his like-minded people: He was successful. Referee Tobias Stieler looked at the scene again, found the contact to be sufficient - and pointed to the point. Niclas Füllkrug started in the ninth minute of stoppage time, shot deliberately and overcame Martin Fraisl.

The result:

In the duel of the relegated Bundesliga, SV Werder Bremen separated 1: 1 (0: 0) from FC Schalke 04. A performance-based result with Schalke two points behind third place and Werder three points behind Schalke.

The scandal of the match day:

Two years ago the abbreviation FFP was just a set of Uefa regulations, Corona was just a right-winger at FC Porto - and a case like that of Markus Anfang was completely unthinkable: On Saturday, SV Werder separated from its coach because he was caught with a fake vaccination certificate. Prosecutor's investigation is ongoing. After initially declaring innocence on Friday evening, the club initially provided backing, and the next morning the contract was terminated. The police have presented "very clear evidence," said Werder managing director Klaus Filbry. Beginning, which should stand for the departure after relegation, had turned out to be the next bad decision by the club management.

First half:

Under the direction of the previous co-trainer Danijel Zenković, Werder set off for the top game in the 2nd Bundesliga. Werder against Schalke, that's a sonorous game, but that evening it was just an ordinary second division game in front of a beautiful backdrop. Lots of duels in midfield, lots of uncleanliness - and a really good chance to lead Bremen, but Victor Pálsson's tackle just before the goal line (32nd) came before Füllkrug.

On the hunt for the 154:

Schalke also had a good opportunity. No, it has to be said: The Schalke team had a bad opportunity, which was made good by the fact that it was Simon Terodde who wanted to ennoble them. The striker started to lift from the most acute angle and would probably have overcome Jiří Pavlenka, but the attempt also missed the goal by a hair's breadth (13th). For four games, Terodde has already been working on his 154th second division, which would mean the only record in the lower house - it approached early in Bremen.

Too good to be fit:

that Werder withstood the Schalke force had a lot to do with the return of a player who still looks out of place in his class in the second division: Ömer Toprak celebrated his comeback from the starting lineup. Werder only won one of six games in which the injury-prone central defender was last out on the field. This time, too, the top earner from Bremen proved to be a stabilizer, straddling Marius Bülter sparkling clean (7th) and holding Bremen's defense together. A murmur went through the stadium when Pálsson unpacked the scythe against Toprak (41.). But it went on for both of them: Toprak was unharmed, Pálsson's boarding was not enough to be sent off.

Second half:

Even after the break, the game did not turn out to be a footballing revelation. Werder played up to the penalty area, then Schalke was too stable. Conversely, pressure phases from Gelsenkirchen were rare, free kicks on one side as well as the other caused the greatest danger - until Schalke unpacked the crowbar.

First the hammer, then the record:

Nothing bad can be said about Rodrigo Zalazar's ball skill: The midfielder, who was loaned to Gelsenkirchen from Frankfurt, has a remarkably soulful right foot. In the 82nd minute of play in Bremen's Weser Stadium, however, he seemed to have exchanged it for a sledgehammer. Zalazar's attempt to shoot Werder keeper Pavlenka right into the goal failed, but Pavlenka was only able to fend off the cannonball forward. And there was the one ready for the diving header, who is always there: top striker Simon Terodde, who didn't let himself take goal number 154 this time and left Hannover 96 legend Dieter Schatzschneider behind in the all-time ranking.

No comment:

After the final whistle, it was of course the late penalty that sparked the problem. Even at Werder, opinions differed: Toprak didn't think the decision was wrong, Zenković was far less sure. Schalkes Rouven Schröder for it all the more: "That was one of the most blatant wrong decisions I have ever seen." And the Schalke professionals? The club announced that they could "not speak at the moment".

At the press conference, coach Dimitrios Grammozis was stunned: "If you don't recognize a very clear handball by the Bremen player plus the swallow - that's just unbelievable," said Grammozis.

“That was beyond the scope of today.

People should ask themselves whether this is the right way, «said the Schalke coach.

“The penalty today was an absolute cheek that I've never seen before.

But people don't care. "
