A stadium that was fully occupied for the first time since March 2020 led Union Berlin to a victory in the Berlin city derby. Hertha barely came to a conclusion - and when they did, the video referee had a say.

Union Berlin won the capital city derby in the Bundesliga against Hertha BSC 2-0 (2-0).

Taiwo Awoniyi (8th minute) and Christopher Trimmel (30th) scored the goals for the hosts from Köpenick.

For the first time since 2020, the stadium at the Alte Försterei was sold out again.

The past three Berlin derbies all took place without spectators.

And the rising corona numbers suggest that this game could also be the last with full capacity of 22,012 fans for the time being.

From the beginning, the hosts in particular seemed all the more determined to give their singing fans a few reasons to cheer.

Already in the eighth minute of the game the grandstands shook for the first time when Herthas Marton Dárdai struck over a through pass from Niko Gießelmann and suddenly Awoniyi was able to slide freely in front of Alexander Schwolow at the bottom left.

For Awoniyi it was the eighth goal of the current season - while Hertha has only scored twelve times to date.

Union remained the more active team, both against and with the ball. In the 22nd minute of the game Schwolow was able to prevent another hit, in the 25th minute Trimmel was only inches missing to make it 2-0.

But a little later he did better when he took a corner from the edge of the box and shot at the left inner post and from there into the goal.

Hertha had more play up to now, but only got a shot on goal for the first time after 37 minutes.

In stoppage time in the first half, the guests were unlucky that a connection goal by Peter Pekarík (45 + 1) after VAR review because of a narrow offside position by Krzysztof Piątek did not count.

Even after changing sides, it was initially the Unioners who came dangerously in front of the opponent's goal, but Awoniyi (53rd), Max Kruse (58th), Gießelmann twice (61st, 77th) and shortly before the end Sheraldo Becker with one Lattenschuss (90th) remained unlucky.

And yet: Against the still uncreative Herthaner it was enough to bring the half-time result over time.

In the table, Union moves past Leipzig and Wolfsburg to fifth.

Hertha remains in 13th place. You can find all results and tables of the Bundesliga in the SPIEGEL Live Center.
