Mainz 05 and 1. FC Köln split 1: 1 (1: 0) in the Bundesliga. The formally strong Jonathan Burkardt had put Mainz in the lead shortly before the end of the first half (41st minute). On the side of the guests, the eight-time goal scorer Anthony Modeste was replaced under pain (45th + 2) before Salih Özcan saved a well-deserved point (47th). In the table, the clubs stay close to each other, Mainz is eighth, Cologne is three points behind in twelfth place.

At first, the game seemed to develop according to the taste of the Cologne team: Stefffen Baumgart's team pushed the Mainz team deep into their own half, and over time more and more great scoring opportunities came together. Ondrej Duda failed with a double chance against Robin Zentner (20th), only to shoot the margin over the crossbar, Luca Kilian, who was loaned from Mainz to the cathedral city, just missed a header (30th).

In addition to the inferiority of Mainz, Dominik Kohrs was injured, Leandro Barreiro Martins came in for the midfielder (34th).

Zentner thwarted the next Cologne chance, this time from Modeste, before Mainz became really dangerous for the first time - and hit directly: Burkardt managed to run a header extension from Karim Onisiwo behind Cologne's defensive chain.

The U21 national striker rounded Kilian and was able to celebrate his fifth goal in the last five Bundesliga games after a hard shot into the near corner.

Modeste out in pain

The first Cologne counterattack after the 0-1 ended painfully: Modeste sprinted after a through pass, Mainz defender Stefan Bell crossed the attacker's path and hit him in the leg. Referee Deniz Aytekin only gave Bell a yellow card. But that had prevented a promising attack - and ended the evening prematurely for Modeste: After the foul game, the Frenchman could only put weight on one leg and was replaced with pain.

The playground in Cologne remained at least equivalent to that of the Mainz team.

Shortly after the restart, the guests came to the well-deserved equalization: Özcan headed a free kick from the half-field into the net (47th).

This was followed by a muddled second half, and Burkardt missed the best chance because Kilian was there with a tackle (87th).
