A French court today sentenced Karim Benzema, the French national football team striker and Real Madrid's top scorer, to a one-year suspended sentence, after he was found guilty of attempting to blackmail a former colleague.
Reuters reported that a court in Versailles issued a ruling against Benzema and decided to fine him 75,000 euros after convicting him of trying to blackmail his former teammate, Mathieu Valbuena.
Benzema, who has denied any wrongdoing, did not appear in court and is scheduled to take part with his Spanish team against Moldovan champions Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League later in the day.
