The round of 16 of the Champions League will take place without Borussia Dortmund. BVB lost 1: 3 (0: 2) at competitor Sporting in Lisbon and are three points behind the Portuguese before the last matchday of the group stage. Since the direct comparison goes to Sporting, Dortmund can no longer move up to second place. The first duel between the two teams ended 1-0 for BVB. It is the first time in four years that Dortmund does not survive the group stage. Because the Ajax Amsterdam group won at Besiktas (2-1) in the parallel game, BVB is in third place. So he winters in the European Cup - in the new year the Europa League continues.

Christopher Nkunku brought the Bundesliga team into the lead, he converted the rebound after a parried attempt by fellow attacker André Silva (12th).
