The round of 16 of the Champions League will take place without Borussia Dortmund. BVB lost 1: 3 (0: 2) at competitor Sporting in Lisbon and are three points behind the Portuguese before the last matchday of the group stage. Since the direct comparison goes to Sporting, Dortmund can no longer move up to second place. The first duel between the two teams ended 1-0 for BVB. It is the first time in four years that Dortmund does not survive the group stage. Because the Ajax Amsterdam group won at Besiktas (2-1) in the parallel game, BVB is in third place. So he winters in the European Cup - in the new year the Europa League continues.

Borussia had entered the key game weakened, several professionals were missing, including Mats Hummels due to a red card suspension and the injured star striker Erling Haaland, and left-back Raphaël Guerreiro was also out shortly before kick-off. Its representative Nico Schulz incorrectly calculated the trajectory of a long ball, stepped past it and enabled Pedro Gonçalves to make the shot to make it 0-1. Dortmund's defense did not look good on the second goal either, shooter Gonçalves came to the end from around 20 meters without pressure from the opponent and overcame keeper Gregor Kobel.

The best BVB chance had Donyell Malen, who rounded Sportings goalkeeper Antonio Adán, but did not get his shot past defender Gonçalo Inácio (40th). The equalizer remained far away and hopes for him were gone when Emre Can saw the red card for a flapping move (75th). Shortly afterwards Pedro Porro increased to 3-0, Gonçalves failed with a penalty from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Porro then headed the rebound into the goal (81st). The final score was created by Malen (90th + 3).

Leipzig could also finish the group stage in third, but that would be a success for RB. Because by the evening the team had taken last place with one point from four encounters. Due to the clear success in Bruges, however, the Leipzigers overtook the Belgians; In the last group game they therefore need as many points as Bruges to continue in the Europa League. Leipzig receives Manchester City, Bruges must compete at Paris Saint-Germain.

In Bruges, Leipzig were clearly the better team.

Christopher Nkunku brought the Bundesliga team into the lead, he converted the rebound after a parried attempt by fellow attacker André Silva (12th).

Shortly thereafter, Emil Forsberg hit a penalty, before the 19-year-old Brian Brobbey had been fouled in his starting line-up for RB (17th).

André Silva with a header (26th) and again Forsberg (45th + 1) ensured a clear stand before the break. Nkunku scored the fifth RB goal in stoppage time.
