In Fort-de-France
From the 16th floor of the Lumina Tower, where the Race HQ of the Transat Jacques Vabre is installed, the view is breathtaking over the majestic Baie des Flamands. Since Tuesday and the arrival of the first boats in Fort-de-France, organizers and journalists have been scanning the horizon regularly, waiting for the next sail to appear in the distance behind Anse Dufour. From then on, the finish line is only a handful of miles away for the sailors' duos, eager to get it over with after a grueling crossing and to celebrate their performance with their loved ones, their team and the public. But it is not at all time to party in Martinique. Since last Monday, the island has even been sinking into a spiral of violence. And in this context of very high tension, the Transat seems quite futile.
There is a lot of sadness.
