The Israeli basketball team opened last night (Thursday) the Mundobasket 2023 qualifying campaign on the right foot with a hard home victory 61:69 over the Polish team in the Drive-In. The team will leave for Tallinn this morning for the second game in the qualifiers against Estonia on Sunday, after the Estonians stunned the German team away 66:69.
It was a fickle evening in the Tel Aviv hall. Poland took control of the floor and ran for a 2:15 lead and led 6:21 before Israel got into things thanks to good minutes from Nimrod Levy, Guy Pnini and Yam Madar, and the team managed to turn the score around before the half. In the second half, Israel already led by 12 points before Poland shrank to only 2 points, but no more than that.
At the end, the team players admitted that the opening was due both to the Poles' good defense but also to their shock.
"Guy prepared us to be excited at first, a new campaign, a new coach. It was a little too much, they pressed and did a good job and we were excited. Glad we got out of it and showed a lot of character," Idan Zalmanson concluded the game, "There is a great team, anyone can "To come on a given day and explode, we did a good job in defense today, at first we missed comfortable shots that we buy all the time, we have dominant guards that attract a lot of fire, and we are happy with the victory."

Israel's opening was very weak. The team in blue and white scored once from the field from 14 attempts and seemed on the safe path to home embarrassment, but then came a three by Nimrod Levy who opened the dam and along with good minutes from Guy Pnini who came off the bench and played almost 30 minutes at 38, the momentum changed completely.
In the second half, Gal Makal also came into the game, who was not good in the first half, with 3 threes from 3 attempts, and together with the continued momentum of Yam Madar and Tomer Ginat managed to maintain the victory. As stated this morning, leaving the team a private flight to Tallinn for the encounter against Estonia on Sunday. After the game, the team decided to go out with the same 12 players to compete, including Roi Hoover and Adam Ariel, who were not included in the game at all, and Itai Segev, who played less than a minute. Golan Gut and Gabi Chechashvili finished their way in this window and stayed in Israel. The team will be joined by Tallinn Roman Sorkin and John Dibertolomeo, and only on Saturday night will the professional team decide who will be the two players who will take their place in favor of the Maccabi Tel Aviv players.
The team pays a lot of respect to Estonia, which has already beaten the boys in blue and white twice in the last few years, and especially when you look at last night's scoreboard in Europe you realize that the surprises are new to the mornings. The fact that most of the teams come with very short staffs leads to these surprises, and Israel knows that if they could leave Tallinn with a second victory, it would be a significant advantage for them at the expense of Germany ahead of perhaps a historic rise to the world championship for the first time in 35 years.
